Steel Toe Boot Fitting Guide
A proper boot fit is essential for lasting comfort and reduced injury. Too many times do we feel the need to “break in” our boots. This often leads to pinching, rubbing, and uncomfortable steel toe footwear. Here in Edmonton, safety footwear is an essential part of meeting PPE requirements and job demands.
What to look for:
- Make sure the length fits your actual foot, not just the measured size. Remove the factory insole, stand on it, and see where your toes land. Around 1cm of extra length from the longest toe should be visible.
- A wide toe box to accommodate wider feet. Work boots should never need to break in to feel good. If it feels to tight in the store, it will most likely feel too tight at work. Ask for a 2E or even 4E to compare.
- Increased ankle height to provide improved stability. This is important if you are prone to rolling or twisting your ankle.
CSA-approved footwear come in a variety of styles and fits. It’s important to take the time to make sure you’re getting the best fit. We help improve this, and prevent injury, with custom made orthotics. Pairing orthotics can help improve:
- Plantar fasciitis or heel pain at work.
- Lower back pain from heavy lifting by distributing pressure evenly.
- Balance and postural deficits due to uneven terrain on the job site.
Frequently Asked Questions
How long do orthotics last?
Custom foot orthotics typically last 1-3 years with proper care, though lifespan varies based on activity level and body weight.
Expected lifespan by type:
- Rigid/semi-rigid orthotics (3D-printed nylon): 2-3 years
- Soft/accommodative orthotics: 1-2 years (material compression)
Do orthotics fit in most safety boots?
Yes, you can easily fit custom orthotics in most CSA-approved safety boots. For best results, orthotics work best in the shoe type they were designed for. For example, work boot orthotics will not fit properly in dress shoes due to volume differences.
